Air Fryer BBQ Turkey Burgers – Juicy, Flavor-Packed, and Weeknight Easy

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 12 minutes
Pre-heat 5 minutes
Total Time 27 minutes
Servings 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 pound (450 g) ground turkey (93% lean is ideal for juiciness)
  • 1/3 cup BBQ sauce, divided (plus more for serving)
  • 1/4 cup grated yellow onion (with juices)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup plain breadcrumbs (panko or regular)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 burger buns, toasted if you like
  • Optional toppings: sliced cheddar or pepper jack, red onion, pickles, lettuce, coleslaw
  • Nonstick spray or a light brush of oil for the air fryer basket

Instructions

  • Prep the air fryer. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3–5 minutes. A preheated basket helps the burgers brown and release cleanly.
  • Mix the burger base. In a large bowl, combine ground turkey, 2 tablespoons of the BBQ sauce (reserve the rest for glazing), grated onion, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir just until combined.
  • Shape the patties. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions. With damp hands, form patties about 1/2 inch thick. Make a small thumb indent in the center of each to prevent doming.
  • Chill briefly. Place patties on a plate and chill for 10–15 minutes. This helps them firm up and hold together in the air fryer.
  • Prep the basket. Lightly spray or brush the air fryer basket with oil. Avoid heavy oiling, which can cause smoking.
  • Cook the first side. Arrange patties in a single layer with a little space between them. Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 6 minutes.
  • Flip and glaze. Flip the patties carefully. Brush the tops with a thin layer of the remaining BBQ sauce. Air fry for another 5–7 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  • Add cheese (optional). If using cheese, add a slice to each patty during the last 1 minute to melt.
  • Rest and build. Let burgers rest for 3 minutes. Toast buns if you like, then stack burgers with your favorite toppings. Add an extra swipe of BBQ sauce for good measure.
