Preheat the air fryer: Set to 375°F (190°C) for 3–5 minutes. Lightly spray the basket with oil to prevent sticking.
Mix the seasoning: In a small bowl, combine 1.5 teaspoons kosher salt, 1 teaspoon black pepper, 1 teaspoon smoked paprika, 1 teaspoon onion powder, and 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder.
Season the beef: In a large bowl, add the ground beef, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, and half the dry seasoning.
Gently mix with your hands until just combined. Don’t overwork it.
Form the patties: Divide into 4–6 equal portions. Shape into patties about 1/2 inch thick and slightly wider than your buns.
Press a small dimple in the center of each patty to prevent doming.
Season the outside: Sprinkle the remaining dry seasoning evenly over both sides of each patty.
Air fry the first side: Place patties in a single layer without crowding. Cook for 6 minutes at 375°F.
Sauce and flip: Brush the tops with BBQ sauce, flip, and brush the other side. Cook 4–6 more minutes, depending on thickness and desired doneness.
Add cheese: In the final minute, place a cheese slice on each patty.
Cook until melted and the burgers reach your preferred internal temperature (see below).
Toast the buns (optional): Remove the burgers, then pop buns into the basket for 1–2 minutes at 350°F to warm and lightly crisp.
Assemble: Spread a thin layer of BBQ sauce on the buns. Add burgers and your favorite toppings—onion, pickles, lettuce, tomato, bacon, or slaw.
